Vtg Mexico 800 Silver Martian Cufflinks PreColumbian Glyph ~ Original BOX SignedIn their Original Box with Great Art Deco - 1950s graphics! Fascinating and Dramatic Design! These vintage Mexican silver cufflinks from Plateria Jenny's are really wonderful! With an interesting abstract design that was likely inspired by PreColumbian glyphs, and looks for all the (other) world like a Martian (or maybe a "one eyed, one-horned, flyin' Purple People Eater" to quote the fifties song), they manage to look ancient and modern at the same time. The lines are so deeply incised and oxidized (deliberately darkened) they look forcefully carved. I must have been staring at them too long - they seem to have lively personality. With the circular shape down, I see little animals with worried faces and tall ears and I think I hear them saying "Oooh!" through rounded lips. And with that circle up, the lyrics of the Purple People Eater song go round in my head. Anyway, however you look at it, this pair will look awesome on your cuffs - from every conceivable angle.
Dating from around the middle of the last century, they are well made and measure about 11/16" square. They have swiveling torpedo-shaped backs and together, weigh 10.1 grams.
The sturdy cardboard box measures about 2-3/4" by 1-3/4" by 1-1/8" deep and has a great silver and black label applied at a jaunty angle that reads "Plateria Jenny's Silver Jewelery. Londres-132. Mexico. D.F." (for Distrito Federal, or Mexico City).
Penultimate photo.
The links are signed on the backs of both faces "800" for silver content and "JP" in a triangle for Plateria Jenny's. Please see the last photo. Whoever the artist was, the success of the design and execution in these cufflinks attests to his artistry and skill.
The cufflinks (and box, especially the red pad that holds the links) could use a good clean but otherwise are in Excellent vintage condition, with dirt, surface scratches and tarnish. There are slight inconsistencies in execution that only add to the charm of their being entirely hand made. (Note minor differences in the carving inside the circles on the faces, for example. And one of the torpedo backs is about 1/16" longer than the other.) The links have a fantastic vintage patina with that great oxidation; cleaning and polishing are left to the buyer's discretion.
This dramatic pair of vintage silver cuff links will enhance your collection - and look fabulous on your cuffs. Of course, in their original presentation box, they would make a terrific gift for
your
favorite Martian,
IF
you could bear to part with them. Perfect for collectors of mid century Mexican silver jewelry, Pre-Columbian motifs, signed silver or of course, cufflinks, this is an outstanding pair of vintage cufflinks made by a Maestro of Mexican silver that will make a fine addition to your collection of quality and distinction!
